As summer heats up across Vancouver Island, it's not just beach days and BBQs that are on the minds of Nanaimo residents, fire safety is now front and centre. Whether you’re a local homeowner, a vacation rental host, or someone considering investing in real estate in Nanaimo, it’s essential to stay updated on what you can and can’t do when it comes to outdoor fires.

On July 15, 2025, the BC Wildfire Service announced a Category 1 Open Fire Prohibition  across the Coastal Fire Centre, effective July 17 at noon. This includes campfires, which many folks associate with summer getaways, backyard hangouts, or evenings at the cabin. While it might feel like a tradition being taken away, the reality is this measure is all about safety, and it's one we can all support.

If you're not familiar, the Coastal Fire Centre covers a huge swath of the province, from the Sunshine Coast and Lower Mainland to Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, and parts of Haida Gwaii. That means here in Nanaimo, the prohibition is fully in effect unless you're within a municipality with its own specific rules (though most cities mirror provincial restrictions closely).

Now, you might be asking: “What does this mean for me as a homeowner or buyer in Nanaimo?”

If you’re hosting guests, operating a short-term rental, or simply spending more time at home, it's crucial to understand what’s off-limits. Campfires, fireworks, sky lanterns, wood-fired hot tubs, and burn barrels are all restricted in most areas until at least October 31, 2025. Violating the ban isn’t just a slap on the wrist—it could result in fines up to $100,000 or even jail time if a wildfire is started as a result.

It’s not all doom and gloom, though. CSA- or ULC-rated outdoor stoves that burn gas or briquettes (like your classic propane fire table) are still allowed. These offer a safe and cozy alternative for those summer evenings outside.
